The Electric Cut
Raking in the Tench
Anybody from Peterborough or close by to the city will have most deffinetly heard of the electric cut just off the river nene in the city centre where the power station used to be. It use to attract anglers from up and down the country with its warm water all year round and resident carp and tench as well as the other normal river species. This water however is not frequented half as much these days and if the time and effort is taken you can have yourself an excellent day cathing a number of fish including one of my favourites the Tench. In the winter these fish can be caught as well as the roach and perch that are more abbundent at these times of year but the most exciting time is the summer. I took the time and effort to cut back the thick growth of rushes and then spent a good few hous to rake the swims bed to clear it of weed and also to stur up the bottom. Having completed this by early afternoon i set up and was ready to fish the prollific time of dusk/last light. I fed with a kilo of plain bread crumb that had been dyed bronze which was laced with two pints of hemp a tin of sweetcorn and a handfull of broken banana and caramel boilies. i then cast my two float rods over the baited area one was baited with a fat dendrobena and caster and the other with a critically balanced piece of real and fake sweetcorn. The pursuit was on, i loose fed a few grains of corn and hemp every few minutes and checked my baits and recast every ten minutes. As dusk arrived and my bait started to come to an end one of my floats rose steadaly from the water until it almost rested horizontaly on the water surface, i struck and was met with a powerfull force which turned out to be a tench of around four pounds, not bad. I carried on untill my bait was all gone and took other fish to seven pounds totaling five fish all bar one where females. So take the time and effort to rake those in-accessable swims and you to could be in with a good day. I am off at the weekend to night fish the hollywell ponds also known as monks cave, i have never fished it before so all advice will be appreciated. Tight lines everyone.
